Marine Technical Consulting
About us
Independent. Technical. Practical.
We are an independent marine compliance and engineering consultancy focused on the recreational marine industry. Our background includes hands-on experience with boat systems, installations, refit work, and standards compliance. We focus on how standards apply in real boats and real yards, not just in documentation.
We do not sell equipment, represent manufacturers or act as a certification body. Our role is to provide objective technical guidance.

How we work
Our approach is technical, straightforward, and focused on solving real problems.
Our goal is simple: clarity and practical solutions.
Services
Compliance Reviews
We review vessels, designs, and production practices against the standards and regulations that apply to them.
Typical work includes:
- ABYC system audits (electrical, fuel, plumbing and other onboard systems)
- ISO vs ABYC gap analysis
- USCG compliance checks
- Pre-inspection readiness reviews
- CE / RCD II technical documentation support
Our deliverables are straightforward and practical:
- Clear written findings
- A prioritized list of non-compliance items
- References to the applicable standards
- Practical guidance on how to correct the issues
- Help with conducting necessary third party testing of marine components
Engineering Support
We provide technical review and system-level engineering guidance.
Our role is not to take over design work, but to ensure systems meet applicable standards and function safely in real vessels.
Areas we commonly review include:
- Electrical systems (for example ABYC E-11, ISO 13297, US CFR)
- Lithium-ion battery systems installations
- Fuel systems and ventilation
- Exhaust and engine room safety
- Design and drawing compliance checks
- Redline drawings and technical notes
Refit & Service Yard Support
Refit work often carries higher technical and liability risk than new builds. Many vessels have undocumented modifications, legacy wiring, or systems that no longer meet modern standards.
We help yards reduce that risk by providing standards-based assessments and clear recommendations.
Typical work includes:
- Refit compliance assessments
- Repower compliance checks (both combustion and electric)
- Safety and systems audits on existing vessels
- Written compliance reports for owners, insurers, and surveyors
Training
We provide practical training focused on the issues that most often lead to safety problems or inspection failures.
Training topics include:
- ABYC electrical fundamentals
- Lithium-ion battery systems on boats
- Common compliance failures in production and refit work
- Understanding marine standards and regulations
- Updates and changes in ABYC and ISO standards
Training can be delivered on-site or remotely depending on the needs of your team.
Industry Standards
Modern boats must comply with a combination of engineering standards and government regulations. Understanding how they interact is critical.
We work primarily with the following frameworks.
ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council)
ABYC develops technical safety standards for recreational boats used primarily in the United States and Canada.
These standards cover nearly every onboard system, including:
- Electrical systems
- Fuel systems
- Ventilation
- Steering and control systems
- Batteries and energy storage
- LPG and fire safety
ABYC standards are widely recognized by surveyors, insurers, manufacturers, and regulators. Many US Coast Guard regulations reference ABYC guidance, and most professional boat builders in North America design their systems around ABYC requirements.
In practice, ABYC standards define what a safe boat system installation looks like.
ISO Small Craft Standards
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) develops global technical standards for many industries, including recreational boats.
The ISO Small Craft standards (ISO/TC 188) cover areas such as:
- Electrical systems
- Stability and flotation
- Fuel systems
- Ventilation
- Structural loads
- Owner’s manuals and documentation
These standards form the technical basis for European regulatory compliance and are widely used by boat builders selling internationally.
CE / RCD II (Recreational Craft Directive)
RCD II is the European Union regulatory framework governing recreational boats between 2.5 and 24 meters.
To sell a new recreational boat in the EU, it must meet the requirements of the Recreational Craft Directive and carry a CE mark.
This process includes:
- Demonstrating compliance with relevant ISO standards
- Producing technical documentation
- Completing conformity assessments
- Creating a technical file for regulatory review
RCD II is not just paperwork — it defines safety requirements, stability limits, emissions standards, and system design rules.
Why These Standards Matter
Marine standards exist for a simple reason: boats operate in a harsh and unforgiving environment. Electrical faults, fuel leaks, poor ventilation, or structural failures can lead to fires, flooding, or loss of propulsion far from assistance. Standards such as ABYC, ISO, and RCD II provide proven engineering practices that reduce those risks.
For builders and yards, following these standards also helps:
– Pass regulatory inspections
– Avoid liability issues
– Meet insurance requirements
– Enter new markets
– Deliver safer and more reliable vessels
